New Jersey Transit officials have announced that ridership levels on the system are nearing those seen before the COVID-19 pandemic. The rebound is attributed to more frequent and reliable service, particularly on bus routes in Newark that were abandoned earlier this year by private carriers.
The transit system’s daily weekday boardings have seen a significant increase of 14% since August, with some 480,000 customers currently utilizing the service each day.
Officials have also noted that interstate service to New York has rebounded to 86% of pre-pandemic levels. The busiest station continues to be New York Penn, with an average of 93,305 weekday boardings. This is followed by Newark Penn (27,695), Secaucus Junction (26,298), Hoboken (15,628), and Metropark (7,537).
NJ Transit is the state's public transportation system serving New Jersey and portions of New York and Pennsylvania with train, bus, light rail, and paratransit.
