The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for large parts of New Jersey, Delaware, and eastern Pennsylvania. This alert is in effect through Thursday afternoon due to heavy rainfall.
Rivers, creeks, and streams may rise out of their banks due to excessive runoff. This could result in flooding in these areas, as well as in other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may also occur in areas with poor drainage and in urban areas.
The NWS expects additional rainfall amounts between 1.0 and 3.0 inches across the area into Thursday. The rain will be heavy at times, with hourly rates reaching or exceeding an inch. The most widespread and heaviest rain is expected to fall this afternoon and early this evening.
During these periods of high rainfall, local flash flooding cannot be ruled out. Even after the rain has ended, excessive runoff may continue to cause rivers, creeks, and streams to rise through the end of the week.
The Weather Service has advised residents to monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
The NWS also offers essential flood safety guidelines. These include seeking higher ground, adhering to evacuation orders, disconnecting utilities and appliances, and avoiding walking in floodwaters.
