Two of my sons tell me they've experienced this and now NYU Professor Dr. Michael Gelb confirms sleep texting is now being classified as a parasomnia just like sleep walking. Here are some interesting facts.

The condition is more prevalent in teens and young adults because “they’re pretty much attached to the phone like an appendage.”

Sleeptexting usually occurs in the two hours after a person falls asleep, interrupting a period of deep restorative sleep that the body needs to replenish the brain after a long day.

Episodes of sleeptexting can increase for people taking certain medications, including sleep aids like Ambien.

As for a treatment, Gelb recommends shutting down all electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bed to give the brain time to unwind. It also obviously helps if you don’t fall asleep while holding your phone.
