U.S. Army Veteran Edward Rayfield was hit by a car and killed in front of the Turkey Hill in Matamoras, Pennsylvania more than two weeks ago. He was 56 years old and homeless by choice. For the past few months Rayfield was living under the drive through of a vacant cigarette store near the Turkey Hill. He also lived under the West End Bridge in Port Jervis, New York for several years. Social Services and police in Port Jervis and Matamoras checked on Rayfield from time to time to see if he needed anything. Eastern Pike Regional Police Officers often bought him coffee at Turkey Hill. He had permission from the property owner to stay in the drive through. When he was killed his veteran I.D. card and military discharge papers were in his wallet but there was no contact information for next of kin. Recently, Rayfield told police chief Chad Stewart he had a father, uncle and son who served in the military. He also said he had an ex-wife who joined the military with him. He never mentioned any names or details when he spoke about his family. At least 5 agencies offered help to Rayfield. Safer housing and social services were available but he chose to be homeless. Authorities continue to search for his next of kin. His body in still at Morristown Medical Center. Where he was taken by helicopter after he was hit by the car.
