While the Corona Virus "panic" continues, here's what we know about the spread of the sickness in New Jersey so far. Yesterday state health officials said 8 new cases have been discovered. That brings New Jersey's total to 23. The bigger concern is that 2 of the new cases could be the result of "community spread." State Department of Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli defined community spread as: "Person to person transmission without exposure to a confirmed case." Then she went on to say "community spread indicates the Corona Virus is amongst us." So where have the cases been so far? Most of the cases have been in Bergen County. Two new cases in Bergenfield and two more in Teaneck came to light yesterday. Cases of the virus have also been confirmed in Middlesex, Monmouth and Burlington Counties. People most at risk of getting seriously ill are the elderly and people with preexisting health issues. Those people should be especially careful. Eventually, the corona virus will spread elsewhere. I seriously think officials should stop trying to make us believe by shutting down public events and commerce they can stop it. The N.B.A. season is on hold. The travel industry is getting hit hard. What's next? The baseball season, Broadway Shows and summer concerts? Influenza cases are in the 10's of millions this year and we've seen similar numbers in years past. We've never reacted by shutting down events and commerce before. I hope this doesn't become a future trend. We should take precautions but we have to keep living our lives.
