Murphy doubles down on plans to reopen schools

Governor Murphy is moving forward with plans to re-open New Jersey Schools without the support of New Jersey's largest teacher's unions. The unions believe in person learning at New Jersey's public schools will put teachers at risk. At his Covid 19 press briefing yesterday the governor said: "Our goal is to provide as much flexibility as possible to local school districts to implement plans that best fit their communities. Safety and education have to go hand in hand. But we must also acknowledge that every education expert we've spoken to over the last several months has confirmed that in person education is critical and that remote learning is only an acceptable substitute when absolutely necessary." Teachers unions are powerful players in New Jersey politics. It appears our Democratic Governor is standing his ground against the teachers unions that strongly supported him.
