Anyone who remembers the tragic events of September 11, 2001 is heart broken this morning. The twin beams of light that shine where the World Trade Center once stood will not be turned on this year. The lights are a powerful visual tribute to all the lives lost that day As well as the thousands of additional lives lost to World Trade Center related illnesses. A spokesman for the National September 11th Memorial and Museum says the tribute has been cancelled out of health concerns for workers who annually set up the display. Instead, the museum is planning an alternate way to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed 19 years ago. The plan includes illuminating the spires and facades of several Manhattan buildings in blue. Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Many Americans alive today were too young to remember what happened on that day. As well as what happened during the months that followed. When hundreds worked non stop to recover bodies and clean up what was left of the destroyed buildings. We vowed back then that we would make sure future generations would never forget. I hope the decision to not light the twin beams isn't the first step toward breaking our promise.
