The battleship New Jersey is one of the largest battleships the United States ever built. Admiral Halsey commanded the 5th fleet from the battleship during World War II. She also saw action during the Korean War, Vietnam and was on active duty in the 1980's. Today the Battleship is a U.S. Navy Museum docked in Camden. Up until Covid-19 it was one of the most popular historic sights to visit in New Jersey. Since the mandated shutdown in March revenues have fallen drastically. Even though the historic ship reopened at 25 percent capacity in June. The revenue coming in has not been enough to keep the tours and museum open. State funding is also up in the air. Phil Rowan, Executive Director of The Battleship New Jersey Memorial calls the Labor Day Closing "A Survival Plan." The hope is that the historic battleship and museum can reopen next April. Meanwhile, only 10 core staff members will remain on the payroll. The rest of the 92 employees will be furloughed.
