According to the New Jersey Department of Treasury gasoline consumption fell almost 40 percent this Spring because of the Covid-19 shut down. A law passed in 2016 guarantees the State Transportation Trust Fund $16 billion over 8 years to improve and maintain roads and bridges. When revenue from the gas tax falls short of expectations in a given fiscal year. A formula is in place to raise the tax on gasoline and diesel fuel to meet the shortfall. This Thursday October 1st people who buy gas and diesel in New Jersey will be paying 9.3 cents more per gallon. That means New Jersey drivers will be paying 40.2 cents per gallon for gasoline and 44.2 cents per gallon for diesel. That does not include Federal Taxes. To put this into perspective drivers in Pennsylvania are still paying an even higher gas tax of 58.7 cents a gallon. New York State's gas tax is 45.6 cents a gallon.
