State Senator Richard Codey has proposed legislation that would fine New Jersey Drivers $200 to $400 dollars for being on their cell phone even if they are stopped at a red light. Second and third offenses would carry even more serious financial consequences and possible license suspension. If passed there would be no difference between driving and being stopped if you are caught with your hands on your phone. Right now, there is no law on the books that prohibits New Jersey drivers from touching their phone when temporarily stopped. Exceptions to the new rule would be when a person is safely pulled over, emergency situations or if someone is in danger. The bill passed the senate transportation committee unanimously on Tuesday. It has not been introduced in the assembly. The New Jersey Department of Transportation says there were over 1,000 accidents related to cell phone usage while driving in 2018. Senator Codey served as acting governor of New Jersey from November of 2004 to January of 2006.
