We've had some very hot days in June and July this year. Usually, August is our hottest month of the year. It's pretty reasonable to expect the same this year. I saw these suggestions the other day on The Daily Meal website. So I thought it would be good to pass along the information. These are some of the foods that are best for us to eat and drink after being outside on a sweltering day. They'll help you get rehydrated and replace the essential nutrients your body has used which include: potassium, proteins, and electrolytes.
Cucumbers-They 95 percent water and very refreshing. I grow them in my summer garden. There's always fresh cucumber salad in my refrigerator July and August.
Bananas- Eat one before or right after being outside in the sun. Your muscles need potassium. Especially, when you are a little dehydrated.
Spinach- Which is also a great source of potassium.
Watermelon- 92 percent water and high in electrolytes and vitamin A
Proteins- Including nuts, eggs, beans and fish
Coconut Water- loaded with potassium, electrolytes, simple sugars and carbs
Chocolate Milk- Yes, I know you're surprised. Studies have been done that show chocolate milk helps athletes recover from a work out even better than Gatorade.
You can also combine several of these foods in one dish. Like the bright and fresh watermelon cucumber salad in the picture.
