West Milford could be closing one elementary school

The West Milford Township School District has lost close to $8 Million in state aid over the past 5 years. The number of students attending schools in the district has been declining. The State of New Jersey has set aside $50 Million in "stabilization" aid to assist districts across the state facing situations similar to West Milford. The district hopes to be able to receive $2 Million of that additional state aid by showing a willingness to reduce costs.

West Milford's application for "stabilization" aid includes a proposal to close one of six elementary schools in the district. Business Administrator Barbara Francisco recently said closing one of the elementary schools was a "financial necessity." A "restructuring committee" made up of education staff and local residents is expected to make their recommendation on an elementary school closure soon.
