It's not a snowstorm this time. It's high winds, very heavy rain, flooding and power outages. As of 5PM today Governor Murphy has declared a State of Emergency in New Jersey. Most of the severe weather related problems are expected to take place late tonight into tomorrow morning. So here's a quick review of what a State of Emergency means in the State of New Jersey.
1) All non essential personnel are asked to stay off the roads so first responders have no additional obstacles on their way to an emergency. It does not mean drivers can be given a ticket for being on the road. There is also no clear legal definition of what an "essential" person is.
2) The State of Emergency does not mean a private company has to pay you if you decide not to come to work. The governor can choose to close state offices.
3) The state can close roads, evacuate homes and even commandeer equipment if public safety is at risk.
