As summer officially begins, New Jersey is already experiencing the height of summer temperatures. An excessive heat advisory has been issued for 18 out of the state's 21 counties, with temperatures expected to reach the low 90s today. The dangerous heat is forecasted to continue through the weekend, with occasional pop-up storms potentially providing some relief.
The heat wave, defined as three consecutive days at or above 90 degrees, is expected to last until Sunday, making it one of the longest and most intense in recent memory. The heat index, which takes into account both temperature and humidity, could flirt with 100-plus degrees over the weekend, pushing conditions into the 'danger zone'.
Despite the intense heat, there will be some relief along the Jersey Shore, where temperatures are expected to be 15 to 20 degrees cooler than inland areas. However, an elevated risk of rip currents is also expected at the beaches.
Residents are reminded to avoid extended time outdoors and to stay hydrated. Temporary relief from the heat and humidity is expected to arrive early next week.
