A sinkhole has emerged on the ramp connecting Spring Street to Route 94 South in Newton, NJ, causing traffic detours. The sinkhole was discovered by local police near the courthouse. The cause of the sinkhole is currently unknown, but authorities suspect it may be due to a pipe leak or compaction issue, as recent underground pipe work and paving were conducted in the area.
To further investigate, authorities plan to use a camera to inspect the manhole near the sinkhole and assess the erosion beneath the pavement. The affected section of Route 94 remains closed, with traffic being rerouted via Water Street.
The timeline for repairs and reopening of the road is yet to be determined.
