N.J. high school coach was sued for asking player to slide

Every boy or girl who plays a sport risks getting hurt. That's the reality of playing. There are rules and equipment to protect players but there are no guarantees. If you want your kids to play you should accept the risk, right? Back in 2012 Bound Brook High School Baseball Coach John Suk asked one of his players to slide into third base and it nearly destroyed his life. The player was 15 year old Jake Mesar. When Mesar slid into third he seriously broke his ankle. He needed multiple surgeries and is career as an athlete was over. It's a sad situation but the story didn't end there. Mesar's family hired a lawyer and sued Suk claiming he had no business telling the boy to slide. Suk's defense was pretty basic. Sliding into bases is a part of baseball. Serious injuries can happen but usually don't. Over $1 Million was on the line as the court battle went on for years. Finally, on Monday a jury in Somerville cleared Suk and ended his 7 year struggle. I give credit to every person who decides to coach our youth. Being involved in sports and other activities is great for kids. Think about what would have happened if Suk lost this case.
