Census numbers show a slight decline in Sussex County's population

Census figures released yesterday show the number of people living in New Jersey's cities was on the rise. While 4 rural counties saw their numbers decline. The population of Sussex County went down by about 5,000 from 2010 to 2020. That's a 3.4 percent decrease. According to the census bureau almost 145,000 people now live in Sussex County. Cumberland, Salem and Cape May Counties also saw a population decrease. New Jersey's cities accounted for most of the state's population growth. Even after a decade of development and expansion along the Jersey City waterfront. Newark is still New Jersey's largest city. Immigration is believed to be the main reason more people now live in New Jersey's cities. New Jersey's population overall increased by almost 500,000. Back in 2000 the census bureau reported Sussex County's population was just over 144,000. Which means the number of people living in Sussex County has been pretty consistent over the past 2 decades.
