The South Orange-Maplewood School District in Essex County has decided to cancel Halloween celebrations during school hours. The district believes that this decision will promote equity, foster inclusion, and enhance a sense of belonging among students.

School superintendent Dr. Ronald Taylor made the announcement to parents earlier in the month, sharing internal reserach that the district conducted to arrive at the decision. Halloween-themed events and costumes are not permitted during school hours - though the option was left open for after school themed activities to be organized by the PTA.

Governor Phil Murphy took to X, formerly Twitter, to react to the decision. In his post, he expressed disbelief over the school district’s decision.

The South Orange-Maplewood School District has not yet responded to Governor Murphy’s post. The decision to cancel Halloween celebrations has sparked a debate among parents, educators, and community members about the balance between tradition and inclusivity.
