As Americans across the nation prepare for the annual Thanksgiving feast, an estimated 46 million turkeys are expected to be consumed. This equates to nearly 3 pounds of poultry per person, with the average turkey weighing in at 15 pounds. However, one lucky bird in New Jersey will escape this fate.
In a unique twist on the traditional White House turkey pardoning, New Jersey is holding its own ceremony. Lt. Governor Tahesha Way will officially pardon “Travis” the turkey at Stew Leonard’s in Paramus. This act of clemency spares Travis from the dinner table and instead, he will be sent to a local New Jersey farm to live out his remaining days in freedom.
This event adds a touch of compassion to the Thanksgiving celebrations, reminding us of the importance of gratitude and kindness during this festive season. While approximately 88% of Americans partake in the tradition of eating turkey, Travis will join the ranks of the fortunate few who are pardoned each year.
