Newark Liberty Airport has introduced a new security checkpoint equipped with CT scanners, aiming to expedite the screening process for the anticipated increase in summer travelers. The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen 4% more passengers this summer compared to last year.
Thomas Carter, TSA's Federal Security Director for New Jersey, announced the debut of the new checkpoint. He emphasized the importance of travelers arriving at the airport early, recommending at least two hours for domestic flights and three hours for international ones.
The CT scanners provide a 3D image of the contents of carry-on bags, enhancing security and efficiency at the checkpoints. The new technology is part of TSA's ongoing efforts to upgrade its primary screening technologies for identity verification and carry-on bag screening.
Despite the new technology, Carter urged travelers to familiarize themselves with what they can and cannot pack in their carry-on luggage to ensure a smooth screening process.
