The Craigmeur Lookout wildfire, which has been burning in the area of Notch Road and Green Pond Road in Rockaway Township since Thursday, is now 85% contained, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. The fire has consumed about 202 acres and is expected to continue producing smoke until significant rain falls over the area.

The wildfire, which threatened 16 structures and led to the evacuation of eight residences, has not caused any damage to buildings. Those evacuated were allowed to return to their homes on Saturday morning. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service, along with local fire departments from Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Sussex, Morris, and Warren counties, have been working to contain the fire. The service has deployed fire engines, bulldozers, ground crews, and a helicopter capable of dropping 350 gallons of water.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The state of New Jersey remains under an extreme wildfire threat, with all outdoor burning, including fireworks, banned. The National Weather Service recorded the third-driest September-October period in 130 years, contributing to the current fire danger threat.

NorthJersey.com reports that the Forest Fire Service will remain on the scene for the next several days to continue to improve containment lines and address areas of concern until significant precipitation occurs to ensure public safety.
