New Jersey topped the list of states with the highest outbound migration in 2024, according to the annual United Van Lines National Movers Study. The study revealed that 67 percent of moves involving New Jersey were outbound, marking the seventh consecutive year the state has held this position. The primary reasons for leaving included retirement and the desire to be closer to family, with over 40 percent of those moving aged 65 and older.

New York followed closely behind, ranking third in the nation for outbound moves. The study highlighted that rising housing costs and a desire for more affordable living options are driving many Americans to relocate to less densely populated areas. Michael A. Stoll, an economist at UCLA, noted that people are seeking economic relief and a better quality of life in these regions.

Conversely, West Virginia saw the highest percentage of inbound migration at 66 percent, with many movers attracted by the state's affordable housing and outdoor activities. Delaware also emerged as a popular destination, ranking second in inbound migration, largely due to its proximity to major cities and appeal to retirees.

The United Van Lines study, which tracks state-to-state migration patterns, underscores the impact of economic disruptions and housing affordability on Americans' moving decisions. Eily Cummings, Vice President of Corporate Communications at United Van Lines, stated that movers are discovering new regions offering both economic relief and a rewarding life experience.
