Pennsylvania has approved over $5 million in grants to help prevent homelessness across the state, including in the Poconos. The Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) announced the funding this week, which will support municipalities and nonprofits in their efforts to assist homeless individuals and families. The grants are part of the Emergency Solutions Grant program, which aims to provide rapid rehousing, homelessness prevention, street outreach, and emergency shelters.

Monroe County will receive nearly $300,000 for general services, while Wayne County will get $50,000 to cover emergency hotel vouchers. These funds are part of a broader initiative by the Shapiro Administration to improve the quality of life for Pennsylvanians by addressing the housing crisis.

According to ABC27, the funding will be used to help homeless individuals quickly find new housing and provide essential housing support. Secretary Rick Siger stated, "Trusted community organizations across Pennsylvania will use these investments to assist individuals and families affected by homelessness."

The grants are authorized by the Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing (HEARTH) Act of 2009. Governor Josh Shapiro recently signed an Executive Order mandating a comprehensive Housing Action Plan to address the state's housing shortage and expand affordable housing options.

The DCED website provides a full list of grant approvals and more information about the Emergency Solutions Grant program.
