New Jersey has launched an online survey to gather feedback about its trails as part of the New Jersey Trails Playbook initiative. This effort, led by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), aims to enhance public access to safe, inclusive outdoor recreation and active transportation opportunities across the state.

The survey invites participation from all residents, including those who do not frequently use trails, as well as visitors who enjoy New Jersey's trails. The data collected will inform the development of the New Jersey Trails Playbook, a series of guidance documents designed to promote and facilitate trail projects statewide. The survey will help shape funding, policy, and planning decisions for trails, ensuring they meet the needs and priorities of New Jersey residents and trail users.

Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette emphasized the importance of trails, stating, "Access to quality trails for enjoyment, exercise, or to get to where you need to go is a fundamental right for everyone." Meanwhile, Transportation Commissioner Fran O’Connor highlighted the state's commitment to enhancing bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.

The survey, which takes approximately 12 minutes to complete, is open until Friday, March 31. It includes multiple-choice questions addressing topics such as trail use, motivations for using or not using trails, and the economic impact of trails on New Jersey. The findings will guide the creation of a resilient statewide trail system that connects communities, boosts local economies, and supports public health.
