Though many people have the common sense not to put their dogs in a dangerous situation, some pet owners think it's okay to leave their animals in cars. The unfortunate result is that hundreds of dogs die each year from heat exhaustion. So if you see a dog in a hot car, can you break the window?
Well, the answer depends on the state. Even though it's illegal to leave an animal in your car in New Jersey no one, not even police, can break into the car to get the animal out.
Instead of smashing windows, try calling the police or locating the owner. If you do choose to break the window, you could be charged with criminal mischief or sued for damages.
