The U.S. Coast Guard assisted the Vernon Police Department in rescuing a hiker who was injured on Stairway to Heaven, a section of the Appalachian Trail in Vernon. Yesterday, the 37-year-old man fell 10 feet onto a ledge near the top of the trail and suffered a head injury.
After the hiker called 911, the police tracked his location using the cellphone signal. They asked for the Coast Guard's help because he was in a location that's difficult to reach. Luckily, they were able to safely rescue the hiker and get him to a hospital.
