Great Gorge Bear Trap to Stay Despite Efforts of Advocates

The bear trap set up at Great Gorge Village in Vernon won't be removed despite efforts by bear advocates. The trap was set up by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife after a bear allegedly charged at a Great Gorge resident and his dog over the weekend.

The bear is reportedly a mother to two cubs and once she's caught they plant to euthanize her. The BEAR Group has been trying to save the bear by looking at other solutions such as focusing on what has been attracting the bears: garbage. They suggested that their Bear Smart Task Force retrofit garbage containers in Great Gorge and clean up garbage around the area rather than trap the bear.

Unfortunately, the trap is still up so the group has been urging people to call Governor Phil Murphy and the Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Catherine McCabe.
