Governor Murphy Pushes for Stricter Gun Laws After Synagogue Shooting

New Jersey already has strict gun laws but Governor Phil Murphy is looking to make them even stricter after a shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue left 11 people dead.  The the new round of laws will reportedly focus on gun trafficking, regulations on ammunition, and smart-gun technology.

Murphy called the new laws "gun-safety package 2.0." and the bills will include:

  • Measures to criminalize all aspects of gun trafficking
  • Requirement that every gun retailer in the state to carry at least one smart gun
  • Requirement that ammunition retailers report sales to the state police
  • Measures to criminalize the purchase of ammunition by people convicted of serious crimes.
