Residents in Pender County, North Carolina were alarmed this morning after authorities received a report of an active shooter at Topsail High School. Apparently faulty heating and ventilation equipment was creating a noise similar to gunfire in the early morning.

The sheriff's department said officers took extra precautions, diverted students to a local grocery store, and searched the campus but there was no evidence that the noise was anything other than the malfunctioning equipment.

The news comes two days after the mass shooting at a country bar in Thousand Oaks, California which left 13 people dead.
