Homeless Vet & NJ Couple Made Up Viral Sob Story to Scam Everyone

A New Jersey couple and the homeless veteran they raised over $400,000 for reportedly made up the sob story that went viral last year. Now, all three will face charges for conspiracy and theft by deception.

Mark D'Amico and Kate McClure, of Florence, started a GoFundMe campaign last November after the veteran, Johnny Bobbitt, allegedly spent his last $20 to help McLure fill her gas tank when she became stranded.

The campaign quickly went viral with thousands of donors chipping in and made headlines again a few later when Bobbitt sued the couple for allegedly withholding funds from him.

D'Amico and McClure have reportedly turned themselves in but it's unclear if Bobbitt has also turned himself over. According to NJ.com the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office has not confirmed the charges but they will be making an announcement on the case at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
