A Lafayette resident and Sparta business owner pleaded guilty to tax evasion on Tuesday, November 13. Thomas Kurczewski admitted to not paying payroll taxes and not filing his personal income tax returns for at least four years, which added up to $338,204.
His business, "Tom K -- The Tax Consultant", opened in 1992 was reportedly located at White Deer Plaza in Sparta. Between 2011 and 2014, the 71-year-old had two employees but he failed to pay payroll taxes for them.
If Kurczewski is convicted on the two charges against him he could spend up to six years in prison and have to pay fines of up to $350,000.
