An unnamed female student at Wallkill Valley Regional High School has been charged with arson after allegedly starting a fire one of the bathrooms this morning. Students reportedly discovered a smoldering garbage can in a second-floor women's bathroom and told school officials.

The local police and the Hardyston Fire Department responded to the incident with the latter working to clear smoke from the bathroom and hallway.

The odor of smoke from the fire prompted administrators to dismiss students at 11:15 a.m. which means they'll have to make the day up later in the school year. Students will also be making up two days that were missed in November due to the explosion of a nearby house.

The student that allegedly started the fire was referred to the Family Division of the Superior Court in Newton.
