A local sanctuary is warning Blairstown residents of a recent increase in dogs being injured by porcupines. Antler Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary is advising residents to use caution when letting dogs outside after seeing a "very large increase" in injuries involving porcupines.

The incidents have occurred in the areas near Yards Creek Generating Station. Police believe the construction at the hydroelectric plant is scaring porcupines down the ridge.

If your dog gets pricked by a porcupine bring it to a vet as soon as possible so the quills can be safely removed. Pet owners shouldn't try to remove the quills themselves because they could break them.
