A fire at a Vernon residence on Route 517 caused significant damage and closed entries to the road for about three hours. The Vernon Township Police Department received a 911 call around 6:30 this morning from someone who was driving by and saw flames.

Responding fire departments included Vernon, Highland Lakes, McAfee, Pochuck Valley and Sussex along with the Glenwood Pochuck Volunteer Ambulance Corps. The fire was reportedly under control within 15 minutes.

Luckily no human residents were home at the time of the incident but unfortunately the family's dog did not survive.
