The Delta gas station at the corner of Breakneck road and Canistear Road was shut down by the Department of Environmental Protection after an underground tank was found to be leaking fuel. According to the New Jersey Herald, the leak was found over two weeks ago and a site remediation professional is performing analyses on wells that are within 500 feet of the Highland Lakes property.
Three nearby wells have reportedly tested positive for excess concentrations of benzene, which is a gasoline component and there's worry that the gasoline could seep into Lake Wanda.
Any remaining fuel in the gas station tanks was allegedly removed last week by a tanker truck.
