A Vernon woman has been sentenced to 15 days in the Sussex County Jail after she admitted to being one of two people that released a bear cub from a trap in Great Gorge Village back in October. According to the New Jersey Herald, Catherine McCartney said that hearing the bear cry for it's mother was "truly horrible" and she let the bear go because "it was the right thing to do."

The 50-year-old pleaded guilty to obstructing a governmental function by means of interference and disturbing the condition of real property intended for use in the lawful taking of wildlife.

Mark Nagelhout, the Park Ridge man that assisted McCartney in releasing the bear, admitted to the same offenses but was not sentenced to jail time as it was his first offense.
