William Paterson Settles Suit Alleging It Didn't Investigate Reported Rape

William Paterson University has settled a lawsuit that claimed they didn't investigate a reported rape from a student who later committed suicide on campus. According to NorthJersey.com, the university will pay $800,000 and create a memorial on campus for Cherelle Jovanna Locklear.

Cherelle was allegedly raped by a former student and fraternity member on September 25, 2015 at an off-campus house. According to NorthJersey.com, she reported both the rape and a suicide attempt on October 26. Less than a month later, on November 22, Cherelle hung herself in a dorm bathroom.

The lawsuit, filed by Cherelle's mother, alleged that the school violated Title IX regulations when it failed to immediately investigate or report her daughter's rape to police. The victim services coordinator allegedly didn't report the rape to police until November.
