An investigation was started after a dead cow and calf were found at Winding Brook Farm in Frankford on Saturday. According to the New Jersey Herald, a concerned motorist saw a bloated cow on its side and called both State Police and Mike Stura, the founder and president of Skylands Sanctuary & Animal Rescue in Wantage.

Stura called Veterinarian Dr. Ted Spinks from the Animal Hospital of Sussex County and when the two arrived, they found the Hereford cow had been dead "for some time." Ten feet away was a dead Hereford calf and a second calf was reportedly found alive but in bad shape. It was taken to Stura's sanctuary where it later died that same day.

According to the New Jersey Herald, the animals didn't have food and were drinking water from the brook on the farm.
