Sesame Street Introduces Muppet Whose Mother is Battling Opioid Addiction

Sesame Street is addressing opioid addiction with a muppet whose mother has a "grown up problem." Earlier in the year Karli was moving in with a foster family for an unknown reason and according to Rolling Stone, the next chapter of her storyline reveals her mother "went away for awhile" to fight her addiction.

Salia Woodbury, a 10-year-old whose parents battled addiction, will reportedly join Karli to discuss their parents' "grown up problem." The show will reinforce that a parent's addiction isn't the fault of the child while Elmo's dad explains how addiction is a disease.

Karli hasn't appeared on the HBO and PBS broadcasts of Sesame Street but she's currently on their free online program Sesame Street in Communities.
