It's been a while since Franklin Sussex Auto Mall did a Hazard County Fair Day with John Schneider. Thousands of people would come out and John would sign autographed pictures. Antique car buffs would bring their vintage 1969/70 Dodge Chargers too. There were always a lot of them.
I always enjoyed interviewing John before and during these events. He was down to earth and always pleasant to talk to. John actually spent his childhood in Rockland County, New York. before he moved to Atlanta. When I told him I grew up in Hudson County he said "Did you ever go to Palisades Park?" Of course I did. It was something we always talked about.
The first time John ever visited here I took my daughter Kim to meet him. I didn't realize at the time John was starring in a different T.V. show that was very popular at the time. He was playing one of the dads on The Secret Life of the American Teenager. The moment she saw John she knew exactly who he was.
Yesterday when I got home from work Kim told me John was going to jail for three days for not keeping up with alimony payments to his estranged wife Elvira. He owes $150,000. When I looked into the story a little more I was saddened to hear that in spite of working hard for many years John has fallen on tough financial times. Flooding destroyed this television production studio in Louisiana in 2016.
John told Fox News yesterday: "If I had the money I would have paid." An unsympathetic judge in Los Angeles sentenced him to spend 3 days in the county jail. John was released after 5 hours because there was no room for him. He will still have to do community service.
I hope things get better for John in the future.
