This is a little too close for comfort. Although it's not the Jersey Shore many people from New Jersey enjoy Long Island Beaches. Robert Moses Beach is where I usually go with my friends and family when I visit Long Island. Yesterday's attacks took place at Fire Island which is pretty close to Robert Moses and Jones Beach. As the crow flies the Jersey Shore isn't that far either.
At 11:15 yesterday morning a 12 year old girl was bitten at Sailor's Haven Beach while she was wading in fairly shallow water. A spokesperson for Fire Island National Seashore says the girl's injuries were not life threatening.
Later in the day a 13 year old boy was attacked while boogie boarding on Atlantique Beach in the town of Islip. He was treated at the life guard tent for a series of small punctures. One puncture contained a tooth which was sent to a lab to determine what kind of fish it belonged to.
These are not confirmed shark attacks but the fish that did this were large. No shark sightings have been reported. Be careful out there.
