New Jersey just took a big step in the direction of having girls high school wrestling as a sport. Right now, girls can join their high school's wrestling team but have to compete against boys if they do. Yesterday, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association executive committee voted to create a championship and tournament just for girls. A final vote will take place next month.
The girls tournament would be at the same location as the boys tournament which is Atlantic City. New Jersey would be the first state on the east coast to have a separate division for girls to wrestle in.
I think this is a great way to get more girls involved in wrestling. Having to wrestle against boys in high school no doubt makes some girls uncomfortable.
