One of the local issues I became familiar with before hosting the Freeholder Town Meeting was the Mountain Creek bankruptcy negotiation. Which includes the sewer bill the resort owes to Vernon. Last September Vernon could not make it's $411,000.00 payment to Sussex County M.U.A. because Mountain Creek couldn't pay the town.
Yesterday announcement that Joe Hession would be Mountain Creek's new principal owner is a hopeful new beginning. Hession is CEO of Snow Operating. He's a young ski industry entrepreneur who was brought in by the current owners of Mountain Creek last year. Hession now takes a controlling interest in Mountain Creek from the current owners the Koffman Family. The Koffman's will be partners with Hession. When Mountain Creek is doing well it's a very good thing for our local economy. That includes Vernon and all of Sussex County.
The New Jersey Herald reported that Mountain Creek and Vernon are on the "cusp" of an agreement that would settle the Chapter 11 filing. Hession said: " I feel confident we will come to a resolution that works for both the town and the resort. Vernon is my hometown, and I recognize that Mountain Creek needs the town and local support, and I also understand the town does best when Mountain Creek is strong and healthy." Hession will run the ski operation as well as the water park.
Ski Season starts in about 5 weeks.
