While Governor Murphy celebrated a razor thin victory last night. It looks like Republicans will gain several seats in the state assembly and state senate. One seat that is now expected to go to a Republican belongs to Senate President Steve Sweeney. With 99 percent of the votes counted Sweeney is 2,000 votes behind challenger Edward Durr. Sweeney has been President of the State Senate since 2010. He is one of New Jersey's most powerful politicians and known for being a truly bi-partisan leader. Durr is a commercial truck driver. His only campaign expenditure was $158 for fliers. He decided to run after he was denied a concealed carry permit. Even though he has no criminal record. He supports lower property taxes and policies that are more friendly to business.
