Two years ago New Jersey officials became concerned that suddenly unemployed residents would not be able to pay their utility bills. Facing tens of thousands of people loosing electric and gas service utility companies voluntarily agreed not to cut off service. The moratorium on shut offs has been extended several times. It will not be extended anymore. Utility customers who are behind have to start making arrangements to pay by March 15th or face loss of service. As of January utility companies are owed more than $661 million dollars. If you are behind and having trouble paying utility companies want to hear from you right away. They say assistance and payment programs are available.
