Last summer Governor Murphy signed New Jersey's "Safe Passing" law. Which went into effect last week. The law is designed to protect pedestrians and people on scooters and bikes. Now in New Jersey drivers have to move into a clear adjacent lane or move over 4 feet if possible. When they're passing a pedestrian, a person riding a bike or traveling on a scooter. If it is not possible to move over 4 feet or change lanes the driver has to slow down to 25 miles per hour and be ready to stop. Violating this new law will result in a $100 fine. That fine goes up to $500 if failure to slow down or move over results in an injury.
