It's been decades since there was passenger train service in Sussex County. The last passenger trains stopped running in the 1970's. All of that might be changing in a few years thanks to the rebuilding of the Roseville Tunnel in Byram. Yesterday the New Jersey Transit Board of Directors approved the project to rebuild the tunnel. The cost will be over $32 Million Dollars. Once the tunnel and 7 miles of rail lines are rebuilt the Morris and Essex Line can be extended into Andover. Overall the project will cost about $62 Million Dollars. Which would include the cost of building a new train station. Eventually, those same rail lines could be part of an extension of Amtrak service all the way to Scranton. Sussex County's elected officials on both sides of the aisle have supported returning rail service to the county for many years. State Senator Steve Oroho told the board before the vote: "It has garnered widespread support for many years. Thousands upon Thousands of commuters from western New Jersey and Pennsylvania have only one option to drive congested I-80."
