While Curt Babcock of Wantage took his 7 and 9 year old sons fishing Sunday afternoon. A large bear started to rip the siding off his family's home a short distance away. Babcock's pregnant wife was inside with the family's youngest child. The bear would not go in spite of her screaming and throwing rocks. After getting a call from his wife Babcock rushed home and attempted to shoot the bear. The sound of the gunshots finally scared the animal away. The New Jersey State Police were called. Babock and a state conservation officer searched the area for signs of blood or the bear but did not find either one. Babcock says he has identified at least 8 bears around his property from trail cameras he has set up. The bear that damaged his home was a large male that looked to be about 350 pounds.
