Incidents involving black bears can cover a wide range of situations. Everything from bears getting into garbage cans to bears attacking pets or humans. Last month a woman in Lafayette was attacked by a black bear when she went to get her mail. Last January a black bear attacked and killed two small dogs in Sparta. There have been 23 incidents of black bears attacking protected livestock across the state so far this year. Starting from January of this year 374 incidents of black bears causing damage or being a nuisance have been reported to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Last year at this time the number of incidents was 168. Governor Murphy cancelled New Jersey's black bear hunt last year. Advocates for a return of a black bear hunt will certainly point to these numbers as a reason to bring back the hunt.
