Workers at a top soil facility in Howell Township discovered a Civil War landmine this week. They were sifting through soil and found the potentially dangerous device on Tuesday. New Jersey State Police were called and the device was taken from Material Transport Group and safely destroyed. There were no major Civil War battles fought in New Jersey. Where the soil came from is not known. So how the landmine managed to stay undetected for over 150 years remains a mystery.
